FITZROY HOUSE
The main house and cottage are nestled close to the water's
edge of Port FitzRoy, with 200 acres of adjoining farmland and native
bush. Originally built in 1901, FitzRoy House is a landmark at the
northern end of Port FitzRoy. After decades of neglect, it has been
fully restored and returned to its original splendour by the owners, Mal
and Tony Bouzaid.
SEAVIEW COTTAGE
The cottage was built adjacent to the main house in1923, and like
FitzRoy House, has been completely renovated to offer clean, comfortable
accommodation for up to 6 persons. The Cottage is a self-contained, separate
entity with 3 bedrooms, and comprising one queen-size, double bed, a pair of
single beds and two bunk-beds. The kitchen / lounge is well-equipped and
comfortable, with French-doors issuing onto two porches, both having marvellous views out over the Port and set against Barrier's
native-bush-covered hills. A logaire fireplace in the lounge makes the
cottage cosy and warm in the winter. The self-contained domestic facilities
include all linen, towels, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and the basic
condiments. The Cottage has a full-size fridge (with a 1.6 cu.ft freezer
compartment) and a gas stove. The bathroom has a shower, wash hand-basin and
toilet, and hot and cold water is supplied from a 5000-gallon rainwater
tank. A BBQ is provided, together with a trestle table - so you can enjoy a
great New Zealand outdoor tradition.

POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS
As there is no reticulated electricity on the Island, power is supplied
by diesel generator, and storage-batteries provide 24-hour lighting. We
suggest that many of your usual electrical appliances would be better left
at home as this resource is limited. Mobile phones can operate from on top
of the hill, or outside the harbour entrance and the batteries can be
charged by arrangement with the proprietors. A fax machine is also
available, by arrangement.
WHAT TO BRING
Food supplies (in particular fresh vegetables) adequate to the duration
of your stay. A torch is a must as it can get very dark without street
lights. If you intend to bush-walk, then, appropriate gear ( e.g. hiking
shoes, woollen socks, waterproof jacket, hat and backpack) is essential.
Bring your own fishing tackle as the fishing is legendary ( bait can be
obtained from the store or the wharf). Don't forget a swimsuit and sunblock,
if the season is suitable.
PROVISIONS
A 10-minute walk from the cottage brings you to the local general store,
which provides all of the basic supplies you are likely to require.
ANIMALS
We are creating a wildlife-sanctuary for the native species of birds, and
other fauna endemic to the Island, many of which are endangered. Our policy
does not permit guests or other visitors to bring animals.
Check Out Time
10 am on the day of departure. Please feel free to continue to use the
grounds and facilities till time to leave.
