PORT FITZROY & HARBOUR
This is one of the best natural harbours in New Zealand, with numerous bays and inlets. Port Fitzroy has always been a mecca for yachts, launches and commercial craft. At Christmas up to 2000 boats can anchor safely in its many bays and coves without congestion. With deep water right up the edges it is possible to anchor and tie the stern to a pohutukawa tree. Its two deep narrow entrances make Port Fitzroy landlocked and a safe harbour even in the worst of storms. The harbour has witnessed many changes over its 200 year history of European settlement. The largest sailing ship built in New Zealand "Stirlingshire" was among eight others built at Nagle Cove. The last major kauri logging in New Zealand used the Kaiaraara Stream to drive logs to the sea. More recently extensive fortifications were built to prevent the Japanese from landing here during World War II.
