Seaview Cottage

Seaview Cottage was built adjacent to the main house in1923, and like Fitzroy House, has been completely renovated to offer clean, comfortable accommodation for up to 6 people.

The Cottage is a self-contained, 3 bedroom separate entity. Bedroom 1 contains one queen size bed, bedroom 2 contains a pair of single beds and bedroom 3 contains two single bunks.

The kitchen/lounge is well-equipped and comfortable, with French-doors opening onto two porches, both having marvelous views out over the Port and set against Barrier's native-bush-covered hills.

A logaire fireplace in the lounge makes the cottage cosy and warm in the winter. The self-contained domestic facilities include all linen, towels, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans and the basic condiments. The Cottage has a full-size fridge/freezer and a gas stove.

The bathroom has a shower, wash hand-basin and toilet, and hot and cold water is supplied from a 5000-gallon rainwater tank.

A BBQ is provided, together with a trestle table - so you can enjoy a great New Zealand outdoor tradition.

As there is no reticulated electricity on the Island, power is supplied by solar panels and storage-batteries providing 24-hour power. Vodafone mobile network is reasonable at the cottage but Telecom is marginal. A short walk will get you better reception for both. There is Wi-Fi internet available upon request.

A 10-minute walk from the cottage brings you to the local general store, which provides all of the basic supplies you are likely to require. The Port Fitzroy Boat Club is at the end of the drive where you can enjoy a meal and a drink.

Check-out is around 10 am on the day of departure but please feel free to continue to use the grounds and facilities till time to leave.

Seaview Cottage is situated at the heart of Glenfern Sanctuary, part of Kotuku Peninsula now a haven for native wildlife. A predator proof fence was built across the peninsula in 2008 and the pests eradicated in 2009. It is home to a number of endangered fauna including black petrel, kaka, kereru, pateke, Cooks petrel, banded rail, North Island robin and chevron skink.

A number of other natives have their home here like kingfisher, tui, forest gecko, copper skink, shining cuckoo, grey warbler, morepork, white faced heron, black and pied shags. As a result we cannot allow our guests or visitors to bring animals.

We welcome guests who bring their own boat and use the cottage as a shore base for their family. This is an ideal arrangement where the boat can be tied at the dock or on our mooring within an easy walk from the cottage. Much of the harbour is only accessible by boat and this makes the most use of the marine and native bush environment.
